Stillages –  More than a Pallet

In logistics the pallet is a vital and integral part of the process, and can be seen in warehouses across the world, piled high with cardboard boxes or film wrapped goods and neatly stacked in the appropriate racking. A problem arises however, when the items being stored are not a uniform shape or are stored loose, which means they are not suitable for an open pallet, so this is where the stillage comes in.

Steel Pallets and stillages

A stillage can be defined as an enclosed pallet, but within that broad term, there are many variations suitable for the vast range of products requiring storage and transportation. For instance the stillage can be made up of demountable steel mesh sides attached to the pallet, when required, to form a cage or it could be a cage with its own base fitted with wheels for ease of movement. The advantage of removable sides is that when not in use they can be stored flat and save on valuable space. Heavier items such as nuts and bolts will require a more robust stillage made of sheet steel to accommodate the extra weight and to ensure security of the load. For some applications a purpose made stillage may be required; an example is a car plant, where parts are used and stored that are unusual shapes and sizes (such as bumpers etc.) and will need a bespoke storage solution.

Because of the huge number of different stillages in circulation there are a number of used ones in the market. Stillages and steel pallets have an extensive shelf life, making them an economical option for long term storage.
