Glossary of Terms
Box pallet (bulk container pallet)
Pallet with solid or close boarded sides, one or more of which can have hinged or removable gates for access.
Captive pallet
Pallet used within a single organisation or closed logistic system.
Cruciform perimeter-base pallet
Perimeter-base pallet with two centre components at right angles to each other.
Disposable pallet / Expendable pallet / One-trip pallet / One way pallet
Pallet intended to be discarded after a single use.
Double-deck pallet
Flat pallet with a top deck and a bottom deck.
Euro pallet
The standard pallet in Europe. 1200 mm by 800 mm.
Exchange pallet
Pallet which can be replaced by a pallet of the same type as an exchange.
Four-way pallet
A pallet constructed to allow a fork lift truck to pick up the pallet from both sides and ends.
Full perimeter-base pallet
Perimeter-base pallet with two centre components at right angles to each other.
Free-entry pallet
Flat pallet with spaces through which the fork-arm wheels of a pallet truck can pass without leaving the ground.
Injection moulded pallet
Formed by heating plastic pallets into a molten mass, which is used to fill a mould. Paint, trims or fastenings can then be applied to the pallet.
Moulded pallet
A pallet made from plastic or wood particles, formed in a mould.
Mesh box pallet
Pallet with mesh, rodded or barred sides, one or more of which may have a hinged or removable gate for access.
Multi-trip pallet
Pallet intended for multiple use
Nestable pallet
Flat pallet with apertures in the top to accept the feet of a similar pallet for stacking when empty.
Pallet
Rigid horizontal platform of minimum height, designed for handling by pallet trucks and/or forklift trucks. Used to assemble, stack, store, transport, or display goods and loads.
Pallet Base
The floor of a container (wire mesh, plastic, wooden, or corrugated steel).
Pallet Bearer
Continuous component between the top and bottom of the pallet, providing space fork-lift forks.
Pallet dimensions
Pallets are measured by length, height and width, in all cases to the outer edges (inclusive of overhang).
Pallet double wing
A pallet with a top deck which extends out from opposite sides.
Pallet life
The usable life of a pallet, usually expressed in time in use or the number of trips that the pallet has been in service.
Perimeter-base pallet
Flat pallet where the bottom is a complete frame with one or two centre components.
Remanufactured pallet
Pallet made with reclaimed components or parts.
Stringer
Continuous component underneath the top or between the top deck and bottom deck, providing space for the entry of fork-lift forks and pallet-truck fingers.
